New Delhi:
Light rains lashed several places of north India today dipping mercury significantly which gave respite to people from the heatwave sweeping the region over the past several days.
Delhi experienced light showers and thunderstorm in some areas this morning with the maximum temperature settling at 38.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, and the minimum settling at 28 degrees Celsius.
Met officials said some areas of the national capital received light rain accompanied by strong winds.
Humidity in the city continued to be on the higher side between 71 and 40 per cent.
Light to moderate rains occurred at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh also.
Sultanpur, Haidergarh, Faizabad and Agra received 2 cm of rainfall, while Ballia, Churk, Fatehgarh, Musafirkhana, Salon got 1 cm showers, the Met department said.
Maximum temperatures remained below the normal level a day after light to moderate showers lashed Punjab and Haryana.
According to the MeT report, Chandigarh recorded a high of 34.8 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.
Ambala in Haryana registered a maximum of 36.3 degrees Celsius while at Hisar it was 35 degrees Celsius, down by five notches, and in Narnaul it was 33.7 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal.
Karnal and Bhiwani also recorded below normal maximums at 35.6 and 37.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In Punjab, Patiala and Ludhiana recorded identical maximum temperatures at 35 degrees Celsius while in Amritsar it was 38 degrees Celsius.
Light to moderate rains occurred at many places since morning in Rajasthan as Ganganagar recorded 7 mm rainfall followed by Bikaner 5.2 mm and Churu 0.5 mm.
Mercury dipped by one to three degrees at most places in the state and the maximum temperature ranged between 36.3 and 40 degrees Celsius at these places even as Jaisalmer and Kota recorded a hot day at 41.5 degrees Celsius.
The MeT departments have forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in many places in these states over the next two days.
