Coronavirus Highlights: India registered a recorded spike of nearly 9,000 new cases on Wednesday.

Coronavirus Highlights: The Supreme Court has given a week's time to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to decide on a common policy for inter-state movement in Delhi and the National Capital Area (NCR). The top court has also directed the centre to call a meeting of the three states and decide on a common portal.

India's tally of coronavirus cases has crossed two lakh after a record number of 9,304 people tested positive for the deadly virus infection in the last 24 hours. The total cases in the country stood at 2,16,919 including 6,075 deaths, government data shows. The country is currently the seventh among the 10 nations hit worst by the virus.

Badly-hit states and union territories such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Delhi continued to report rising tallies, while new cases continued to surface in several eastern and north-eastern states including Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim.

Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala also figured among the states where more people tested positive for COVID-19.

Coronavirus News: Cases Cross 2.2 Lakh, Centre Says Delhi's Status Worrying
India's tally of coronavirus cases crossed 2.2 lakh on Thursday with a record spike of over 9,000 new cases and several states reporting their highest one-day surge, even as efforts were accelerated to restart long-stalled business activities to contain the economic cost of the pandemic.

The Union Health Ministry released standard operating procedures for reopening offices, hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and religious places. Some of them have already re-opened in parts of the country and few others are scheduled to re-start from Monday.

In its morning update, the Union Health Ministry said the total number of positive cases had crossed 2.16 lakh with a record spike of 9,304 new cases since 8 AM Wednesday across the country, while the number of deaths had increased to 6,075 with 260 more fatalities in this period. Read

Coronavirus News: Centre Issues New Rules For Reopening Of Offices
Any employee residing in a COVID-19 containment zone should be allowed to work from home and not attend office till the time the area is denotified, the Union health ministry said on Thursday.

The period will not be counted as leave, the ministry said.

According to SOP issued by the ministry, an entire office building need not be closed if one or two cases of COVID-19 are reported there and work can resume after disinfection as per the laid down protocols. Read

Coronavirus News: Triage Within 1 Hour: Delhi Issues New Rules For COVID-19 Treatment
Amid reports of people being turned back or made to wait for a long time at hospitals, the Delhi government on Thursday

issued a new standard operating procedure or SOP for treating coronavirus patients.
According to the rules, COVID-19 patients shall be brought to the triage area from the ambulance without asking for any

details. This process must be completed in 15 minutes. Doctors on call must attend to the patient within an hour. Food and

water should be available in the waiting area as well.

If beds are not available at the hospital, then it will be entirely the responsibility of the hospital to transfer the

patient to another one and till then the hospital will provide medical care to the patient, the new rules say. Read

Coronavirus News: With Malls, Hotels, Restaurants To Open Monday, Centre Lists New Rules
The government on Thursday announced new rules for allowing shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and places of worship to open gradually following the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. The guidelines, which will come into effect from Monday, include measures like staggering visitors to malls and no touching of idols at religious places.

Detailed rules were also issued for offices which have been allowed to reopen over the past few weeks. All establishments that come under containment zones, however, will remain closed as announced earlier.

Temperature screenings will be a must at entrances and visitors will be allowed only if they use face cover or masks which should be worn at all times inside, the Health Ministry said in its guidelines. Coronavirus news: Bihar COVID-19 deaths reach 28, cases climb to 4,452
Bihar reported three COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, taking the overall deaths in the state to 28, the health department said.

Also, 126 fresh cases pushed the state's tally to 4,452, it added.

The department said in a statement that the latest deaths were reported from Begusarai, Sheohar and Nawada districts.

It, however, did not provide details like age, sex, travel history and co-morbidities, if any, suffered by the deceased and whether they died before or after testing positive.

Of the 28 deaths, Khagaria and Begusarai account for three each followed by Patna, Vaishali, Siwan, Bhojpur and Sitamarhi (two each) and Munger, Rohtas, East Champaran, Nalanda, Samastipur, Saran, Bhagalpur, Jehanabad, Madhepura, Jamui, Sheohar and Nawada (one each).

Of the 126 fresh cases reported, 94 are from Wednesday, test results of which were received on Thursday morning.

Coronavirus news: 25 fresh COVID-19 cases in Tripura, total rises to 647
Twenty-five more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura on Thursday, taking the number of such cases in the state to 647, officials said.

Of the 647 cases, 474 are active as 173 patients have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals, they said, adding that all active patients are undergoing treatment at the GB Pant Hospital.

In a tweet late in the evening, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said, "Alert. Today in Tripura 25 people found COVID-19 positive out of 875 samples tested. All of them have travel history. Stay safe."

Coronavirus news: Over one lakh COVID tests conducted in Punjab, says State health minister
Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Thursday said more than one lakh samples have been tested for COVID-19 infection in the state so far.

He said Punjab has increased its testing per million to 3,259, which is higher than the national average of 3,046.

"Punjab has completed testing of over 1,00,000 samples for COVID-19," the minister said in an official release.

Mr Sidhu added that the state was conducting around 4,500 tests per day.

The minister said the state government has decided to provide special training to community health workers, staff nurses and pharmacists for collection of swab samples to increase sample collection capacity.

Coronavirus news: BJP lawmaker fined for violating Covid rules
Odisha police fined BJP leader and Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi on Thursday for attending a gathering without a face mask and violating social distancing norms laid down by the government to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Images showing her surrounded by supporters at a party worker's residence in violation of the government norms were widely shared on social media.

The parliamentarian said she acknowledged her duty, respected the sentiments and concerns of people and volunteered to pay the fine according to the rules.

A penalty was imposed on the MP and 20 others for violating social distancing norms, Commissioner of Police Sudhansu Sarangi told PTI.

People must observe self-discipline and strictly adhere to norms; they should cooperate with the government in the fight against the coronavirus, he said.

Coronavirus news: Chhattisgarh records biggest one-day increase in coronavirus cases
The number of coronavirus cases in Chhattisgarh increased to 773 on Thursday with 93 more people, including two junior doctors, testing positive for virus, a health official here said.

It was the biggest spike in a single day in the number of patients, he said.

"Of the new cases, 19 each were reported from Mahasamund and Jashpur districts, 17 from Bilaspur, nine from Janjgir-Champa, six each from Raipur and Rajnandgaon, five from Raigarh, four from Kabirdham, three each from Gariaband and two from Surajpur," the official said.

Two junior doctors who were posted in Coronavirus OPD in Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), Bilaspur are among the new patients found in the district, he said.

On the other hand, 17 patients were discharged from three hospitals of the state following recovery, he said. The state's COVID-19 count is now 773, though active cases are 565 as 206 people have been discharged and two patients died, he said.

Coronavirus news: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa praises police's role in fighting COVID-19
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday reviewed the progress of the home department and appreciated the efforts and services rendered by police during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Chief Minister instructed to strengthen the CEN (Cybercrime, economic offence and narcotics) police stations. He said that the forensic laboratories would be strengthened to hasten the investigations of the crimes, reported news agency PTI.

Under Emergency Response Scheme, allocations would be made for the purchase of vehicles, he said.

It was decided to continue the services of more than 3,000 home guards who are at the risk of losing their jobs and depute them to different departments.

Coronavirus news: Masks to be compulsory on public transport in England
Masks will be compulsory on public transport in England from next week to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, transport minister Grant Shapps said Thursday.

"As of 15th June, face coverings will be mandatory on public transport," he said at a daily briefing on the government's response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The government had previously advised people to wear face coverings in enclosed spaces such as shops and public transport but stopped short of making them compulsory.

They remain only a recommendation in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, whose devolved administrations have responsibility for transport.

The announcement was made as part of plans to ease lockdown restrictions in England, as infection rates and the number of deaths from COVID-19 falls.

Coronavirus news: 179 migrant workers airlifted to Raipur from Bengaluru
179 migrant workers, who were stranded amid COVID-19 lockdown in Bengaluru, were airlifted to Chhattisgarh''s capital Raipur in a chartered flight on Thursday.

The air travel was arranged by alumni of the Bengaluru-based National Law University (NLU) and NALSAR.

After landing in Raipur, these migrants were transported back to their respective districts by buses. Now, they will be kept in the quarantine centres for 14 days after which they will be sent to their homes.

Expressing happiness over their return, three labourers said that they were stuck in Bengaluru since the lockdown, they did not have any work and they were facing trouble in arranging meals for themselves. "We are thankful that NLU and NALSAR came to help us and flew us back to our state," they said.

Coronavirus news: J&K records biggest single-day spike of 285 COVID-19 cases; tally crosses 3,000-mark
Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday recorded the biggest single-day spike of 285 positive COVID-19 cases, as the number of infected persons crossed the 3000-mark, officials said.

"285 new positive cases of coronavirus were detected in the union territory on Thursday," they said.

The officials said this is the biggest single-day spike of the positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir so far, reported news agency PTI.

While 63 of these cases are from the Jammu region, 222 are from Kashmir, they said.

The officials said the total number of cases in Jammu and Kashmir has now reached 3,142.

"Of these, 2,407 are in Kashmir and 735 in the Jammu region," they added.

There are now 2,059 active cases in the union territory -- 1,488 in Kashmir and 571 in Jammu. A total of 1,048 patients have recovered, the officials said.

Coronavirus news: Mumbai's Dharavi's COVID-19 cases go up to 1,872
As 23 more people tested coronavirus positive, the tally of such cases in Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum sprawl, rose to 1,872 on Thursday, a senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

However, as no COVID-19 fatality was reported in Dharavi in the last 24 hours, the death toll there remained unchanged at 71, the official said.

Dharavi is located in G-North administrative ward of the BMC, which has so far registered the highest number of 2,820 COVID-19 cases among all the 24 wards. Of them, as many as 1,872 cases are from Dharavi alone, followed by 574 and 347 cases from Mahim and Dadar, respectively, from the same ward, reported news agency PTI.

Coronavirus news: Delhi Police officer suspended for not wearing mask, violating social distancing norms
An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Delhi Police was suspended for not wearing mask and failing to maintain social distancing norms in office, officials said on Thursday.

The ASI is posted with the 4th Battalion of Delhi Armed Police (DAP).

This is the first such case where departmental action has been taken against a policeman for violating social distancing norms, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (4th Battalion DAP) Satyavir Katara said the ASI was suspended for not wearing mask and violating social distancing norms. He has been sent to the district line and an departmental enquiry is underway, reported news agency PTI.

"After repeated directions as per S.O.P issued by the government of India and briefed by the undersigned many times, today, on June 1, I checked the offices/ branches of 4th Battalion of DAP, and found that ASI Surrender is not wearing mask and also not maintaining social distance in the office/ branches of 4th Bn DAP, Delhi.

Coronavirus news: Night curfew during lockdown relaxed in Bengal
The West Bengal government Thursday issued an order relaxing the night curfew hours and strictly prohibiting movement of individuals between 9 pm and 5 am except for essential activities in view of the lockdown.

The relaxation in the night curfew hours will take effect from June 4, the order issued by state Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said.

"Night curfew will continue but the timings have been relaxed to 9pm to 5am from the earlier 7pm to 7am," a senior official said.

Coronavirus news: Bombay High Court seeks information on disposal of COVID-19 victims' bodies
The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the state government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to file an affidavit with details about how bodies of deceased COVID-19 patients were handled and disposed.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Amjad Sayed was hearing a petition filed by BJP MLA Ashish Shelar raising concerns about the manner in which bodies of deceased COVID-19 patients were handled at the civic-run Sion Hospital in central Mumbai, reported news agency PTI.

Mr Shelar, in his plea, sought a direction to the government and civic authorities to immediately stop the practice of keeping bodies of deceased coronavirus patients in wards where people are being treated for the infection.

The petitioner claimed that several videos had surfaced from the hospital, which showed bodies of deceased patients lying on beds or on ground, right next to people who were undergoing treatment for the deadly infection.

Coronavirus news: 10 new cases in Himachal Pradesh, 17 cured, tally at 370
Ten fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, taking the state tally to 370, officials said.

Meanwhile, 17 people - 9 from Kangra, 6 from Shimla and 1 each from Bilaspur and Una also - were also cured of the virus, Special Health Secretary Nipun Jindal said.

Four of the fresh cases were reported in Kangra, followed by three in Mandi and one each in Chamba, Bilaspur and Kullu, he added.

The number of coronavirus cases in the state has risen to 370, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) R D Dhiman said, adding that the number of active patients is 197, reported news agency PTI.
