Meghalaya Election Results 2018 Highlights: Congress Single Largest Party In Meghalaya, But House Hung

Election result: The Congress hopes to retain power in the state that has been their strong hold with a 10-year rule. The BJP gave the ruling Congress government a tough fight and fielded 47 candidates in the assembly polls, while the Congress put up nominees in 59 constituencies.

Meghalaya election results: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma wins both constituencies that he contested at.

Its a hung house in Meghalaya as no party could get majority in the election. Congress has emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats but far below the majority mark of 30. The party has sent top leaders Kamal Nath and Ahmed Patel from Delhi to talk to regional parties for support.  "Associates have assured support in the last one hour. The BJP is out of the fray, they are trying to create mischief," said Kamal Nath to NDTV. The BJP and its regional allies in Meghalaya like the National People's Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party are contesting separately. The party's senior strategist Hiamta Biswa Sarma is in state capital Shillong to work out a post-poll alliance. BJP has got only two seats, whereas Conrad Sangma-led NPP has secured 19 seats.

The Parties Which Hold The Key To Meghalaya's Next Government

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won six seats followed by the People's Democratic Front (PDF) with four and the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP)with two. The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement and the Nationalist Congress Party won one seat each.

Commenting on election results, NPP chief Conrad Sangma said, "We are hopeful that we will be able to form the government. People are fed up with the corrupt Congress government and are looking for a change."

The BJP, making gains in a state where it had won no seats in 2013, has won two. It has indicated that it will attempt to put together a post-poll alliance. "Meghalaya is heading for a divided house. We will see how we can form a non-Congress government there," said senior BJP leader Ram Madhav.

In Meghalaya, the Congress is leading in 21 seats, 10 short of the halfway mark at 31.
