Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Vientiane on Wednesday in the Laotian capital to attend the ASEAN-India and the East Asia Summits to strengthen India's trade and security ties with the strategic Southeast Asian region.

Speaking at the India-ASEAN Summit this morning, PM Modi said, "ASEAN is central to India's policy. ASEAN is a source of harmony and balance. It performs three functions - security, economic and social."
Speaking on terrorism, he said, "Export of terror, growing radicalisation and spread of extreme violence are common security threats to our societies."
"We are willing to take concrete steps to enhance co-op in cyber security, de-radicalisation and counter terrorism," he added.

ASEAN Summit this year comes at a time of heightened tensions on a wide range of fronts across the region, with terrorism also a concern after deadly bomb blasts in Thailand and the Philippines in recent weeks.
During his two-day visit, PM Modi is scheduled to have several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summits.
