President Of India Election On July 17, Announces Election Commission Of India

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India is announcing the schedule of the upcoming election of the fourteenth President of India. The election will be held on July 17. President Pranab Mukherjee's term expires in July. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been seeking the support of other opposition parties to decide on a candidate they can all agree on. 

Here are the highlights of the press conference by Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi.
 
  • The voting process will involve the following: members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and members of all the Legislative Assemblies of states and union territories
  • President Pranab Mukherjee's term ends on 24th of July
  • Members of Parliament are requested to vote at the parliament in New Delhi, while MLAs are required to vote in their respective state capitals. 
  • However, in case of emergency, they can give a 10-day notice. MLA's can also vote at the Parliament in Delhi after giving a 10-day notice.
  • No political party or politician can give a gift to any MP or MLA in relation to the matter of the Presidential election.
  • Counting of votes will be held in New Delhi.
  • June 14 - Notification to be issued by EC
  • June 28 - Last date to make nomination
  • June 29 - Date for scrutiny of nomination
  • July 1 - Last day to withdraw nomination
  • July 17 - Date of Election
  • July 20 - Counting of votes
