Weather LIVE updates: Delhi saw heavy rain for a second day

Delhi saw heavy rain for a second day in a row. The weather office said the 24-hour rain in the national capital was the highest in 40 years. Many roads at markets and residential areas are flooded. Commuters found it tough to travel as water accumulated in low-lying areas, such as under flyovers. Twelve people have died in the past two days as heavy rain pounded several parts of north India. The weather office has predicted more showers over the next couple of days.

Delhi rain: Pragati Maidan tunnel closed for traffic due to waterlogging
The Pragati Maidan tunnel was closed on Sunday for traffic due to waterlogging while the Minto Road bridge was shut for nearly two hours due to the incessant rain pounding the national capital, said a government official.

The Public Works Department (PWD) received 100 calls reporting waterlogging from several areas throughout the day, the official said.

PWD minister Atishi's official residence in the posh Mathura Road area too was submerged with water. The heavy rain brought at least two Delhi ministers out on the streets to check on waterlogged roads.

Due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging in various areas of the national capital,the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has advised senior bureaucrats residing on the ground floors to relocate to safer places as a precautionary measure.

In a span of 24 hours, ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, Delhi recorded 153 mm of rainfall, marking the highest single-day rainfall in July since 1982, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Waterlogging: Over 3,400 police personnel deployed to manage traffic in Delhi
More than 3,400 police personnel were deployed on Sunday at 50 locations in the city to manage traffic in view of waterlogging on several road stretches due to heavy rain for the second consecutive day.

There was waterlogging since the morning hours, which resulted in traffic snarls across the city, and the Traffic Control room received complaints regarding congestion, uprooting of trees, potholes and signals not working, according to officials.

Police personnel were deployed at intersections where signals were not working, they said and added that data collected by the traffic police showed that there were potholes at four major locations -- Bagga roundabout, on Ambedkar Road, Rail Bhawan to Windsor Place on Raisina Road and Adhchini on Aurobindo Marg.

Flood warning in Delhi after Haryana discharges over 1 lakh cusecs of water into Yamuna
The Delhi government issued a flood warning on Sunday as Haryana released more than one lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage.

The irrigation and flood control department said this was the first warning, with 1,05,453 cusecs of water discharged at 4 pm.

Normally, the flow rate at the barrage is 352 cusecs, but heavy rainfall in the catchment areas increases the discharge. The water from the barrage takes around two to three days to reach Delhi.

Heavy rain hits Delhi for second day; traffic hit, massive waterlogging across city
With heavy rainfalls lashing the national capital for the second consecutive day, many areas of Delhi witnessed waterlogging on Sunday, causing traffic snarls for commuters According to officials, the Public Works Department (PWD) received 38 complaints related to waterlogging till the afternoon. The majority of the complaints pertained to Okhla main road, Kamla Nagar, Nilothi, Ranhola, Kirari, etc.

"The PWD control room has been monitoring the situation of waterlogging through 24X7 CCTV camera surveillance. Apart from CCTV cameras, they also receive complaints from people through email, WhatsApp, social media and phone," a PWD official said.

The Delhi Traffic Police has also been alerting commuters through its official Twitter handle about traffic congestion due to waterlogging in some of the areas of the national capital.

Heavy rains: 17 trains cancelled, 12 diverted, says Northern Railways
The Northern Railways has cancelled around 17 trains and diverted around 12 others as heavy rains pounded several parts of the region.

In a statement, a Northern Railways spokesperson said traffic has been suspended at four locations due to waterlogging. These include sections between Noganwan (Ambala)-New Morinda, between Nangal Dam and Anandpur Sahib and between Kiratpur Sahib and Bharatgarh.

Wall of Delhi government school collapses due to rain
A wall of a Delhi government school in Srinivaspuri collapsed on Sunday due to rain.
According to sources, the school was reconstructed only four months ago.

With heavy rain battering the national capital, a portion of the border wall of the school collapsed on Sunday.  Reacting to the incident, Aparajitha Gautam of the Delhi Parent Association said the city government "should not just focus on the quality of education, but also on the quality of infrastructure".

"While the Aam Aadmi Party talks about world-class education, the infrastructure aspect should also not be neglected. Along with quality education, the AAP government should focus on improving infrastructure too," she said.
