New Delhi:

The Congress-National Conference alliance has crossed the halfway mark and secured 49 seats out of 90, winning the Assembly elections and is set to form the government. Of these, 42 seats belong to the National Conference, 6 to the Indian National Congress and one to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) - CPI (M).

"Omar Abdullah Banega J&K Chief Minister," National Conference's Farooq Abdullah announced after a strong showing in Jammu and Kashmir polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was proud of the BJP's performance in the Union Territory, adding, "I thank all those who have voted for our Party and placed their trust in us."

The assembly elections for its 90 constituencies were held in three phases - September 18, September 25, and October 1 - after a gap of 10 years. This is also the first time Jammu and Kashmir had assembly elections since Article 370 was abolished in August 2019, which divided the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Jammu And Kashmir Elections Result: Engineer Rashid's Party Fails To Deliver In J&K Assembly Polls

The Awami Ittehad Party led by Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid, who proved a giant slayer after he defeated former chief minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 parliamentary elections, has failed to make much impact in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls.

Rashid, who won while incarcerated in Tihar Jail on terror funding charges, attempted to demonstrate that his parliamentary win was not merely a fluke. However, he failed to strike a chord with the voters in the first assembly polls after the abrogation of Article 370.

After being granted interim bail on September 10, the Baramulla MP was allowed to campaign until October 2. His bail was later extended, enabling him to actively participate in the electoral process.

Despite his efforts, the majority of candidates associated with his party lost their deposits, indicating a clear disapproval from the electorate.

The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) had fielded 44 candidates. Even prominent figures, including AIP spokesperson Firdous Baba and businessman Sheikh Ashiq Hussain, lost the polls.
