The Winter Session of Parliament is off to a stormy start as the Opposition presents a united face  in seeking to corner the Narendra Modi government over the demonetisation issue calling it a "currency scam" that needs to be probed.

  • There were rumours that salt is being sold in black markets due to shortage
  • When we checked, the production is 2 lakh 20 thousand metric tonnes, consumption is 60,000
  • So vested interests are spreading rumours. Similar rumours on government employee salaries. Nothing will happen, don't worry
  • This is a historic step against corruption. Only PM could do it
  • Yes, there were shortcoming, but PM is holding review meetings, we are taking steps
  • Separate lines for aged at banks and ATMs, toll free highways etc
  • People have a problem because the graph of popularity of PM Modi is going up

  • It (demonetisation) is like mothers giving birth. This temporary pain is going to get long term gain
  • The ban will put an end to large amounts of counterfeit currency, put an end to aiding, abetting and terror funding
  • I know there is heartburning and some people are angry at PM Modi
  • This is a new kind of intolerance. Intolerance against people's mandate
  • If it a 25-year-old idea, you (opposition) had it, but never implemented it. This great man (PM Modi) has done it
  • PM Modi is not just the tallest leader in India, but is being recognized as that in the world

  • Elections are coming up in many states. Anything you do it being taken in the context of polls
  • Some organisations involved in anti-national activities are worried
  • People who have thrived on black money, on nepotism and greed and pointing fingers at the government
  • People say it (notes ban) has taken place before. Yes, under Morarji Desai. But the circulation of higher denominations was 6-7 per cent. What is the size of the economy now? You must understand. The circulation of higher denomination notes is 82-84 per cent
  • From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, no one doubts the intention of the government and commitment of the Prime Minister

  • People are saying it was sudden. What does that mean? People should have been warned to take precautions and move the money elsewhere and make necessary arrangements
  • Swachh means clean India. Swachh has to be man se, tan se and dhan se
  • Under whose rule was the coal scam and 2G scam? You (Congress) should be mindful of your words, it will boomerang and hurt you because you have ruled and ruined the country for years
  • This is war on black money and you (opposition) should choose your side
  • Those who side with the offenders will be taken to task

  • Terrorists, smugglers, maoists, separatists etc. using black and counterfeit money - is their fundamental right?
  • Congress must take a stand if they do or don't support the notes ban
  • Even after all the inconveniences, people across the country are praising PM Modi
  • Temporary pain for long term gain
  • I can assure you if your money is valid, it will not become invalid

What I demand is immediately - besides the JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee) and investigation - till alternate arrangements are not made, allow these notes to be used for white transactions

People are suffering and the suffering is increasing by the day.
  • Why are you agonising people. What is this fascistic way of controlling people's personal lives.
  • There is a 'chamakta' (shining) India, for them Paytm and electronic wallets are viable. What about the 'tarasta' (troubled) Bharat.

  • There so many suicides. People can't get their father, mother treated in hospital

  1. Bulk of black money is not a stock, it is a flow
  2. Those you are not stopping
  3. The small fishes are dying while the crocodiles are enjoying
  4. If you stop Rs 500/1000 notes, do you think corruption will stop? Now corruption will double with Rs 2000 notes

What's basis of exemptions, asks Sitaram Yechury

  • In Assam there is a by-election, day after tomorrow. So for Assam tea gardens, the central government is giving an exemption.
  • But not to Bengal? Why. This should be investigated
  • In Maharashtra, they have said you can use old notes to buy cinema tickets
  • You can't buy food but cinema tickets?
  • How are these exemptions being decided?
