Hyderabad:
Tribal women chased away a local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader from Andhra Pradesh during protests over a China clay mining project in Visakhapatnam.
The leader from Araku constituency, Siveru Soma and Dumbriguda Mandal President Korra Dhanna Rao were attending a public hearing in Sayari village when they faced the tribals' ire for not taking their consent over a mining lease granted to a woman, who villagers say, was propped up by the mining company.
The hearing had to be cancelled after a mob, comprising mostly women, chased away the Soma. The agitated villagers also targeted their vehicles.
TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has now directed Siveru Soma to "lead'' the agitation against china clay mining in Dumbriguda. The TDP has demanded that the government come out with a policy statement on mining in tribal areas to protect the environment and rights of tribals.
