Voters at a polling booth in Maharashtra's Latur cheered as a 105-year-old woman cast her vote at a polling booth this morning, along with her family. She was among the many enthusiastic elderly voters who were seen casting their votes at polling booths across the country. Voting is being held for the second phase of national elections in 95 Lok seats in 11 states and one union territory, Pondicherry.
Kavaibai Kamble, seated on a wheelchair, voted at a polling booth in Harangul New Colony of Latur. Her children and relatives accompanied her.
Other voters at the booth cheered and clapped for Kavaibai Kamble as she voted.
In Jammu and Kashmir, an 80-year-old patient, Jogindero Devi, came directly from a hospital at a polling booth in Kathua to cast her vote.
Two women in nineties - Usha and Urmila, cast their votes at a polling booth in Bihar's Bhagalpur.
In Assam, two centenarians cast their votes. A 104-year-old woman, Saraguna Bibi, from state's Hailakandi district told ANI she had never "missed exercising her right to vote".
116-year-old Mahamud Ali also cast his vote in Assam's Karimganj. Mr Ali, a freedom fighter, speaking on voting rights, said,"Even after Independence, people living in this area used to die of starvation. But situations have changed now. It is because of this democracy that we do not have hunger and poverty like those times."
But in Odisha, where assembly elections are being held in 35 constituencies, a 95-year-old man died while waiting in the queue to cast his vote in Kansamari booth of Sanakhemundi, which falls in the Lok Sabha constituency.
The national elections, which began on April 11, will continue till May 19; the votes will be counted on May 23.
