"Barack Obama Asks Me A Question Every Time We Meet": PM To Akshay Kumar

PM Narendra Modi said, "Common people do not believe in such things. Thoughts like being Prime Minister could only come to those who belong to a particular background."

The video interaction has been recorded at PM Modi's official home in 7 Lok Kalyan Marg in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in what is pitched as a "non-political conversation" with filmstar Akshay Kumar that he never imagined he would rise to the country's top post one day, because his "family background" was not like that.

"Common people do not believe in such things. Thoughts like being Prime Minister could only come to those who belong to a particular background. But my family background is such that if I got any good job, my mother would have distributed gud (jiggery) to neighbours, because we never thought beyond that. We never saw anything outside our village," he said.

He called his journey to the post of Prime Minister "unnatural" and unreal.

"This journey just started and the country accepted me. Responsibilities also came to me automatically. My personal view is that this is unnatural because my life and world does not fit in current political atmosphere. I always wonder how the country loves me and gives me so much," PM Modi told Akshay Kumar.

There was a time, he added, he had though he would either become a "sanyasi" (hermit) or a soldier.

The interaction, aired on Wednesday after the third round of voting for the national election that ends on May 19, took place at PM Modi's 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence in Delhi.

Before the talk went live, Akshay Kumar teased portions in which he asked PM Modi about his sleep schedule, his love for mangoes and how he vents when he's angry. The actor said the chat would offer a "breather" to the Prime Minister from his campaign.

PM Modi shared that former US President Barack Obama has one question for him every time they met: "Do you sleep more?"

"You sleep only three-four hours, a body needs at least seven, right," asked Akshay Kumar. In response, PM Modi shared this anecdote: "When President Obama met me for the first time he asked me why do you do this? Now whenever we meet he asks me have you increased the amount you slept or now?"

Akshay Kumar's cryptic tweet announcing that he was "Getting into an unknown and uncharted territory, something I have never done before", had fuelled speculation that he was contesting the elections. "Excited and nervous both. Stay tuned for updates," he posted, causing a frenzy on Twitter until he clarified that he was not contesting.
