New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a bill for regulating chemical weapons in accordance with international convention and another to set up more AIIMS-like institutes amidst opposition din demanding prime minister's resignation.
As BJP and its allies raised slogans, the Chemical Weapons Convention (Amendment) Bill, 2012, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012, were passed by voice vote.
The AIIMS bill will replace an ordinance which allowed the six AIIMS-like institutes to become operational from September 15.
The Chemical Weapons Convention (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend the Chemical Weapons Convention Act, 2000, which was enacted to give effect to the convention on the Prohibition of the development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons and on their destruction.
India had signed the convention on January 14, 1993.
The passing of the two bills, despite the BJP's attempts to disrupt parliament proceedings for the seventh day in a row over the official auditor's report on coal block allocations, shows the government's mind to get its legislative business conducted before the monsoon session ends September 7.
