A local court in Goa has fixed August 7 for hearing former Goa Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat's anticipatory bail application in connection with his alleged role in the Louis Berger bribery scandal.
Granting interim relief to former Goa chief minister and Congress leader Digambar Kamat, a local court today fixed August 7 for hearing his anticipatory bail application in connection with his alleged role in the Louis Berger bribery scandal.
The district and sessions court reserved the hearing after the Crime Branch said that it was not ready with a reply to the notice that they had received from the court on Mr Kamat's plea, the leader will not be arrested till the next hearing.
Yesterday, Mr Kamat had moved the court fearing arrest in connection with the scandal involving the US-based firm. The 61-year-old Congress leader was chief minister between 2007 and 2012 when the New Jersey-based consultancy firm, Louis Berger, allegedly doled out bribes to win the consultancy for a water project under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funding.
Mr Kamat, along with the then Public Works Department minister, Churchill Alemao, was questioned by the Crime Branch twice last week.
The court also remanded former JICA director for Goa, Anand Wachasunder in judicial custody for seven days. The Crime Branch had separately arrested Mr Wachasunder and former vice-president of Louis Berger, Satyakam Mohanty in connection with the case.
Yesterday, Mr Mohanty was remanded in police custody for three days.
Officials of Louis Berger had admitted in a US court that they had paid bribes to Indian officials to the tune of nearly USD one million to win two major water developmental projects in Goa and Assam.
