Amid strife in neighbouring Sri Lanka, central security agencies have sounded an alert in Tamil Nadu following intelligence inputs suggesting that cadre of banned LTTE, some of them may be suicide bombers, may slip into the country disguised as refugees.
The alert has been sounded in neighbouring Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh as well to keep a watch on the movement along the coastal lines as LTTE cadres, facing the wrath of Sri Lankan army, may try and infiltrate as refugees, official sources said.
According to UN estimates about one lakh people are still trapped in the war zone and are desperately seeking refuge at safer locations. Some of them have already landed on the Indian coast.
The Tamil Nadu Government and some voluntary organisations have organised camps for the incoming refugees.
The intelligence inputs suggest some desperate LTTE ultras may flee the war zone in the guise of refugees and land up in India.
"The possible influx of suicide bombers cannot be ruled out, especially in the wake of sympathisers who may provide them refuge here," a senior official of the home ministry said.
