Ludhiana remains tense, under curfew

Ludhiana: Ludhiana remains tense and under curfew for the 3rd day on Sunday.

The Delhi-Ludhiana highway has been closed to traffic following clash between protestors opposed to a religious gathering and police on Saturday, in which one person was killed.

Protestors are still on streets shouting slogans but no violence has been reported so far today. Sikh organisations have called for a bandh as well.

Curfew was imposed in entire Ludhiana city on Saturday after one person was killed and 15 others, including three policemen, were injured when some Sikhs objecting to a religious congregation by Jalandhar-based sect clashed with police. (In pics: Ludhiana erupts again)

On Friday, protests by migrant labourers turned ugly.

The labourers torched more than six vehicles, pelted stones and jammed the highway as they protested against the police for not taking action on their complaint. Reinforcements had to be called in to control the angry crowds.
