Kolkata: Polling for the fourth phase of assembly elections in West Bengal will be held on Monday and one of the biggest names whose fate will be sealed is Trinamool Congress' Madan Mitra.

Mr Mitra, an accused in the Saradha chit fund scam, is currently in jail and has not been able to campaign for his seat in Kamarhati, about 10 kilometres from Kolkata.

However, his friends and family are leaving no stone unturned to ensure he wins Kamarhati again.

"The election commission has accepted his nomination. We believe Madan Mitra will be back and he will be victorious in this election," said Gopal Saha, chairman of Kamarhati Municipality.

Taking on Madan Mitra is CPI(M)'s Manas Mukherjee who has enough ammunition to attack the Trinamool Congress leader who is in jail.

CPI(M)'s Manas Mukherjee said Madan Mitra has to be defeated to save the prestige of West Bengal.

Mr Mukherjee told NDTV, "People are saying Madan Mitra has to be defeated to save the prestige of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee says she is the candidate for all 294 seats. It is a fight against Mamata Banerjee's policies."

Contesting from the same seat is BJP's Krishanu Mitra. He is fighting election on the development plan pushed by PM Narendra Modi. "I am fighting two musclemen. After almost 70 years of independence, there is no drinking water and sanitation facility in lakhs of homes," Mr Mitra said.

BJP's Krishanu Mitra is also contesting from Kamarhati.

For Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kamarhati is a prestige fight. She campaigned for Mr Mitra and blamed Prime Minister Modi for putting him in jail.

Earlier during the week, Ms Banerjee said the prime minister is giving sermons while Congress and the Left are busy lodging complaints against her.
