Maharashtra Chief Minister, deputy squabble over berths

Maharashtra Chief Minister, deputy squabble over berths
Mumbai: Maharashtra has a brand new Chief Minister and deputy, but even before the swearing in, the two men are squabbling over ministries.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar of the NCP is on the offensive, demanding an extra ministerial berth for his party. The Congress Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has ruled this out.

Ajit Pawar justifies his demand saying, "What we feel is that out of the 43 seats they should get 22 seats and we should get 21."

But Prithviraj Chavan is clear he will not acquiesce. "There is no question of demanding more seats. Seat-sharing arrangement was decided at a meeting between the two parties. There is no need to discuss it again," he said.

This is not the first such tussle. The long partnership in Maharashtra has seen its share of tug-of-war on both seat-sharing and ministry-sharing. It's unlikely to be the last.

But according to some reports, the NCP now seems to have taken a step back on the extra cabinet berth despite Ajit Pawar's strong stand.
