Nagpur:

Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Sunday stuck to his gun that Congress should go it alone in the ensuing state Assembly elections and said there was no toning down of his stance.

"I have completed my arguments and the case is awaiting for a decision from the party high command. We are waiting for the verdict," Deshmukh, the former Maharashtra chief minister, told reporters in Nagpur on Sunday.

He said, "Show me any statement where I have toned down my stance as claimed by NCP leaders. I still feel no pre-poll alliance with NCP but post-poll alliance was always possible after the results are out."

"I have pleaded the sentiments of hundreds of Congress workers who wanted to go alone in the forthcoming State Assembly Elections," Deshmukh added.

To a question, whether Congress will be able to muster enough majority on its own to form the government, Deshmukh said if you see Congress party's performance during the recent Lok Sabha polls, it's an ample proof of its popularity.

The Congress-led government, which is in its second term, will not have to face any anti-incumbency factor that is evident from the Lok Sabha results, he said, adding the opposition parties including BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS are suffering from internal problems.
