Maharashtra Election Result 2019: The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance will win a complete majority in the state

Mumbai:

Counting of votes for the Maharashtra assembly election 2019 ended with the BJP and its ally Shiv Sena winning a clear majority in Maharashtra. This will pave the way for a second consecutive NDA government in the state. The BJP has won 105 seats while the Shiv Sena has won 56 seats, taking their alliance tally to 161. Similarly, the Congress-NCP alliance won 98 seats, in which the NCP won 54 seats and the Congress 44.

Election for 288-member Maharashtra assembly was held on October 21. The BJP contested in 150 seats while its alliance partner - the Shiv Sena contested in 124. The remaining 14 seats were given to regional parties who allied with them. The majority mark for the Maharashtra Assembly is 145.

The BJP has chose to continue its alliance with Shiv Sena, despite their roller-coaster relationship over the last five years. The two parties had come together after a brief breakup when in 2014, neither succeeded in getting majority on its own. The Shiv Sena since had been a vocal critic of the BJP-led government's policies at the state and the Centre.

Here are the highlights on counting day for the Maharashtra Assembly election result 2019:

Maharashtra Election Result 2019 LIVE: "Treat Me The Same, Nothing Has Changed," Aaditya Thackeray Says After Big Win

Aaditya Thackeray, the first of his family to fight an election, won comprehensively from the Worli assembly constituency in Mumbai, defeating his NCP rival by over 70,000 votes.

"Please treat me the same as you have in the past nine years, nothing has changed," the 29-year-old Shiv Sena leader said in his remarks to the media after his victory.

The Shiv Sena, leading in 57 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, gained leverage as the BJP, which contested more seats, failed to touch the majority mark on its own.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray's father, demanded that the BJP honour the 50:50 agreement made during his meeting with BJP chief and Union Minister Amit Shah earlier this year. The party indicated that it wanted a turn at the Chief Minister's post.

This set off a buzz around Aaditya Thackeray, with many speculating that the Shiv Sena may insist on the top job for him.

Thackeray junior avoided commenting on the speculation.

"It is a humbling, proud moment to see support and love for Sena. I would appeal to the media, please treat me as the same, nothing has changed... Always guide me," said Aaditya Thackeray, speaking in Marathi, Hindi and English.

The young Sena leader was widely predicted to win the Worli seat, which is a Sena stronghold.

Since his grandfather Bal Thackeray founded the Shiv Sena in 1966, no one from the Thackeray clan had ever contested elections.

Aaditya Thackeray has emerged as the most affable face of the Shiv Sena. His entry into politics helped rebrand the Sena; his roadshows and foot marches and his support to campaigns like the one against tree-cutting in Aarey endeared him to the younger generation.

Worli is among the 36 assembly seats in Mumbai. Originally a settlement of fishermen, the constituency in south Mumbai has transformed over the years with its skyline featuring high-rise buildings and modern commercial complexes.

Aaditya Thackeray says he wants to make the constituency a "model of development".

"I am ready to accept all criticism and feedback received as an MLA of my constituency. I thank the candidates from other parties who won and did not win. This is the power of the people," he told reporters after his win.

Maharashtra Election Result 2019 LIVE: PM Narendra Modi's Speech At BJP Headquarters As BJP-Shiv Sena Win Majority

Here are the highlights of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech to BJP workers at the BJP headquarters on BJP-Shiv Sena's win in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election:

  • I thank the people for the faith they have shown in our governments in both the states.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Manohar Lal Khattar were never even ministers anywhere before, but they took everyone along and for five years, they served Maharashtra and Haryana with honesty, for welfare of the people.
  • The coming five years will see both the states scale new heights of development.
  • These are unprecedented victories because normally these days few governments return after five years. In such times to be elected again is a big deal.
  • In the last elections we got 33% of the vote in Haryana and this time it went up to 36%. It's a stamp of approval on our work there.
  • I have worked for many years in Haryana for the party. Whenever we partnered with any party there, it had to be on their terms and conditions. It would be a big deal if we even touched double digits. And this is just 2014 I am talking about. To come from there to where we are today is remarkable. No praise is enough for the BJP team in Haryana.
  • Similarly in Maharashtra, for years we were the junior partner in the state. In the last 50 years, no single chief minister has been able to serve Maharashtra for five straight years. And Devendra Fadnavis has been the first chief minister of Maharashtra in 50 years to have served the full 5-year term. But today's win assures Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis another 5 years to lead the state to greater progress.
  • Maharashtra and Mumbai have a big role in the economy of our country. Political stability accounts for a lot there. But for years even parties with 2/3rd majority could not last. But see the nature of the BJP, which takes everyone along.
  • In 2014, the BJP and Shiv Sena fought elections against each other but the people wanted us to join hands. We partnered with the Shiv Sena after the elections and ran a stable and unblemished government for 5 years. And even this time the people of Maharashtra have given our alliance a complete majority.
  • I want to assure the people of both the states that you have showered so much blessings on us. Our team was new, we did not have a lot of experience but we barely left the path of serving the people. I promise you, in in the next five years, we will work even harder to fulfill your dreams.
  • Other governments spend their first two years renaming schemes made by the central government so that Modi doesn't get any credit. But because it's a BJP government, everything will be seamless.
  • I am certain in the coming days, we will not spare any effort to ensure progress in these states. I once again congratulate the teams of Devendra Fadnavis and Manohar Lal Khattar.

Maharashtra Election Result 2019 LIVE: BJP Chief Amit Shah's Speech To Party Workers On BJP-Shiv Sena Win

Here are the highlights of BJP chief Amit Shah's speech to BJP workers on BJP-Shiv Sena's win in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election:

  • I thank people of Haryana and Maharashtra on behalf of BJP workers
  • The results today show that BJP-Sena will form the government once again in Maharashtra with complete majority
  • In Haryana too, we have emerged as the single largest party by increasing our vote share by 3%
  • In Modi 2.0, BJP has won both its first two elections
  • These two states have never been our traditional bases
  • Both state governments fulfilled the expectations of the people and ran a zero-corruption administration
  • On completing five years, both Manohar Lal Khattar and Devendra Fadnavis have received the approval of the people
  • In 5 months, the Modi 2.0 government has done as much work as many have not been able to do in even 5 years
  • And yesterday Modi ji gifted 40 lakh people of Delhi a Diwali gift
  • We passed the Triple Talaq law that was stuck for years, and opened doors to development in Kashmir by revoking Articles 370 and 35A
  • I believe that is why people of the states gave us these victories.
