Mumbai: A government official who allegedly demanded bribe and insisted on "Rs 100 notes only" has been arrested in Maharashtra.
Balasaheb Bhikaji Babar, an agriculture officer in Solapur, had demanded Rs 2,500 from a man for forwarding his application. After the government declared Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes illegal on Tuesday, Mr Babar allegedly told Dattatray Bedge to make sure he got 25 notes of Rs 100 denomination.
The 43-year-old official was caught after Mr Bedge complained to the police.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise announcement that the two highest denomination notes were being taken out of circulation has led to a massive scramble for cash. People are rushing to banks and ATMs for new notes.
"Give bribe, but Rs 100 only" was one of the jokes widely circulated after the big move. The official in Maharashtra was the first reported case of that becoming reality.
