Maharashtra logged 67,123 coronavirus cases on Saturday in its biggest single-day spike since the start of the pandemic. The worst-hit state in the country also recorded 419 deaths because of the virus in the last 24 hours.
The total coronavirus cases in the state today climbed to 37,70,707 out of which 30,61,174 patients have recovered. 56,783 people were discharged in the last 24 hours, the government statement read.
The state's recovery rate is 81.18 per cent and the fatality rate is 1.59 per cent.
Maharashtra currently has a whopping 6,47,933 active cases, which are exerting tremendous pressure on the state's health infrastructure.
Currently 35,72,584 people are in home quarantine and 25,623 people are in institutional quarantine.
This was the second day in a row that the state reported over 60,000 daily coronavirus cases. On Friday, Maharashtra's Covid figure was 63,729 infections, which was also a record.
With 12,825 coronavirus cases and 30 deaths in a day, Pune remains the worst-affected city in Maharashtra. Mumbai is second on the list with 8,811 cases and 51 deaths in a day followed by Nagpur with 7,484 cases and 34 deaths.
On Friday, Pune had reported 11,047 cases and 47 deaths. Mumbai had logged 8,803 cases and 53 deaths in the last 24 hours, followed by Nagpur with 6,395 cases and 23 deaths.
Because of the massive caseload, Maharashtra is desperate for hospital beds and medical supplies, especially life-saving medical oxygen. Earlier this month, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked the centre to help the state resolve its oxygen situation.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the measures taken by the centre to supply medical oxygen to the twelve worst-affected states including Maharashtra.
Union Minister Harsh Vardhan today said he had reached out to Uddhav Thackeray and assured him that Maharashtra would get an "adequate and uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen", and 1,121 ventilators.
India's Covid caseload rose to 1.45 crore with 2,34,692 fresh infections - the sharpest-ever daily spike - as the country recorded over 2 lakh cases for the third straight day. With 1,341 deaths, India saw the deadliest day of the pandemic this year.
