Maharashtra police has sounded an alert after Intelligence Bureau informed them about terror threat to the state, Director General of Police S S Virk said here on Tuesday.
"Intelligence Bureau has given a fresh alert about the threat, two to three days back. I have instructed my men to be alert," Virk told PTI.
"Though we receive alert on regular basis, we do not want to take any chance," he added.
Virk did not share the details of the threat mentioned by IB.
Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivanandan had recently said that the city was facing terror threat and this threat could come from anywhere - road, air or sea.
No imminent threat
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday said three coastal states in the western region do not face any imminent security threat.
"There was an intelligence input regarding a potential threat to the three coastal states Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa, but it was not an imminent threat," he said.
"We have shared an input with the coastal states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa. That is normal practice," he said.
"Intelligence inputs are shared with the states, but that does not mean there is an imminent threat. It only means we must be aware of such an input and take preventive measures in case such a threat materialises," Chidambaram said.
The Central government had created a comprehensive coastal security scheme which included the creation of coastal police stations, outposts and providing them with a large number of boats, the Home Minister said.
"It is an ongoing scheme. Once it is implemented coastal security will be stronger," Chidambaram said.
A coastal command had also been created with the Indian Navy at the helm and the Coast Guard to implement it, he said, adding that steps were being taken to strengthen coastal police and the coastal command.
