Maharashtra: Why CCTVs are still on hold

Maharashtra: Why CCTVs are still on hold
Mumbai: Shortly after the recent Mumbai blasts, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan admitted that procurement of crucial security equipment including 5,000 CCTV cameras was still on hold. Mr Chavan attributed it to red tape and inability to take a decision.

"There is a problem where we have not been able to procure CCTV cameras. Money is not a problem as such. Whatever numbers are required will be put in. Problem is technology keeps on changing and procurement has been a weakness, right from defence procurement to central police procurement to state police procurement. People are just afraid to take decisions about tenders, about specifications," Mr Chavan told NDTV.

NDTV has learnt that the proposal had reached by the end of 2009; the CCTV proposal had moved rapidly to a stage of inviting bids. But then sources say it went into cold storage because it lacked political support from crucial departments.

At the time Ashok Chavan was the Chief Minister and RR Patil was the Home Minister.
