Geeta is currently living in Indore under the supervision of an organisation for deaf and mute.

New Delhi: The DNA test of Geeta, the deaf and mute girl who had returned to India, 11 years after inadvertently crossing into Pakistan, did not match with the Mahato family from Bihar, who had claimed she was their first child.

Mahatos were among many families who have come forward claiming that Geeta was their daughter.

"It is true that we had done DNA test of Geeta. The Mahato family had come forward and seeing their pictures, Geeta had felt perhaps they are her parents. Their DNA test was also conducted. Her DNA test was negative," said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup. He added that the report, prepared by AIIMS, has been sent to Mahato family.

Mr Swarup also said that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will travel to Indore on November 23 to meet Geeta and enquire about her well-being.

Geeta had failed to recognise the Mahato family after she arrived in Delhi though while in Pakistan, she had identified them in photographs.

Mr Mahato had claimed that Geeta was his first child and her name was Heera and that she was lost in a fair in 2004.

Mr Swarup said some other families have also come forward saying perhaps Geeta was their child and government has been sending their pictures to her who is staying in a rehabilitation centre for deaf and mute people in Indore.

She is being given skill development training there. "Geeta is going through the pictures but she has not said that they may be her parents," said Mr Swarup.

Geeta's story came to light after the release of Salman Khan starer 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' in which the hero unites a little girl in India with her separated Pakistani mother.
