The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday nominated veteran lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani to take on Priya Dutt, daughter of late Congressman Sunil Dutt.
While Priya is yet to respond, Mahesh Jethmalani's father Ram Jethmalani's stepped in, expressing surprise that the BJP nominated his son despite his differences with the party.
It is also ironical since Mahesh Jethmalani used to be Sanjay Dutt's defence lawyer. Mahesh's father also once fought Priya's father Sunil Dutt.
"She's a good girl, but a very inefficient MP," said Mahesh.
Mahesh's father Ram Jethmalani was a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet, but in 2004, broke away from the party and fought against Vajpayee from Lucknow.
"It is an apology that knowing my son's views perfectly well they have made him a member and given him ticket. May be the BJP has changed," said Ram Jethmalani.
"My father's views are his own. I have my own views. Despite what my father Ram Jethmalani said about Atal Behari Vajpayee, he is close to the BJP," said Mahesh.
Whatever the Jethmalani-BJP equation may be, the BJP will be hoping Mahesh Jethmalani can snatch back the seat his father lost to Sunil Dutt in 1984.
