Main venue for 2010 Games worries official

New Delhi: With less than eight months to go for the Commonwealth Games (CWG), details have emerged of a letter written by a council member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) about the work pending at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium - the main venue of the Games.

Bill Bailey, who is also the technical delegate to Indian sports authorities for the Commonwealth Games, wrote:

"During my stay in Delhi (January-February 2010), I took the opportunity to visit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to see how the renovation were progressing. I was surprised - even shocked - to see the state of the stadium. I am extremely concerned about the amount of work yet to be completed, and the short time frame in which it has to be done. With the recent completion of several other CWG venues, I do hope that a concentrated effort can now be made to ensure that the completed stadium be delivered before mid-June 2010."

The Nehru stadium is scheduled to host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.
