New Delhi: In fresh twists in the Badaun alleged gangrape case in which two girls were found hanging from a tree, CBI today said that the main eyewitness had failed lie detector test raising questions over his testimony.
According to CBI, Babu Ram alias Nazru, the sole eye-witness in the case, underwent a polygraphic test recently. The report was received today which showed "inconsistencies in his statement" on key questions related to the case.
It was on the basis of Nazru's statement that the Uttar Pradesh police had registered a case and arrested five people including two of its own constables. It was alleged that the two girls, who were related, had been raped before being murdered.
Nazru had, during his lie detector test, admitted he had a mobile phone. He had earlier denied possession of a cell phone.
The mobile phone has been recovered from him and sent for forensic examination to ascertain whether any data had been deleted from the instrument, CBI said.
CBI had taken into custody five accused-- Pappu, Awadhesh and Urvesh Yadav (brothers) and constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav--for alleged rape and murder of the two teenage girls. All of them were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
The two cousins - aged 14 and 15 - were found hanging from a tree in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh in the last week of May. The incident had sparked a national outrage with the Samajwadi Party government in the state coming under fire on the issue of law and order situation.
CBI had also alleged the post-mortem conducted by a local doctor had discrepancies.
