Makeover for Mumbai police

Mumbai:

The combat operation against the terrorists during the Mumbai terror attack is an unforgettable moment. RPF Constable Jillu Yadav took on Kasab and Abu Ismail at CST with a rifle that didn't function and a plastic chair.

Eight months later, the Mumbai police rolled out its new fleet, which consists over 200 armoured vehicles including Commando bikes and bulletproof cars. This is a part of its Rs 30 crore makeover plan.

Despite the high-profile function, many say this is just a lip service. The Ram Pradhan Committee, which inquired the lapses on 26/11, listed out just how little equipment and ammunition the police has.

The report said that the Quick Response Team has not practiced in the last two years because of the lack of ammunition; the state police have not received any ammunition since December 2006 -- the police received its last lot of AK-47 bullets in 2005. But the city's top cop says the force has enough firepower.

"We have enough ammunition for operational purposes and we will get more soon," said Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivandanan.

Beyond equipment, what's urgently needed is a revamp of the Intelligence network, which is crucial in preventing a repeat of 26/11.
