Making Indian roads safer

New Delhi: Every year in India, over one lakh people are killed in road accidents. In an attempt to promote road safety measures the International Road Federation is holding its fourth regional conference in Delhi. The idea is to suggest that all agencies involved must work together to reduce road fatalities to half in the next three years.

Experts from India and abroad stressing the need for public education and awareness about road safety measures at the conference.

K K Kapila, Vice Chairman, International Road Federation says, "I appeal both to the government as well as the corporate sector to extend a helping hand and encourage all aspects of road safety to be incorporated in our road system, vehicle design and operation thereby facilitating safe as well as speedy travel for both passengers and goods. If our roads can become forgiving roads, India would have done itself proud by saving a large number of human lives."

The exchange of ideas between experts from India and abroad also covered the efforts put in by corporate sector in India. The need for proper driving schools and renewal of all driver's licenses only after proper road safety training was also discussed.
