Kolkata:
Mamata Banerjee has tweeted her criticism to the Narendra Modi government's move to scrap 500 and 1000 rupee notes from midnight today in all caps.
"WITHDRAW THIS DRACONIAN DECISION," the West Bengal chief minister said, calling it "heartless and ill-conceived" and "a financial chaos and disaster let loose on the common people of India."
"I want to know from PM how my poorest brothers sisters, who've recd their week's hard earned wage in one 500 re note will buy ata, chal, tomorrow?" she asked, also emphasising that while she is strongly against black money and corruption she is deeply concerned about how common people will "buy essentials tomorrow."
The Congress too said the sudden decision, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an address to the nation, would create "a lot of problems for traders, small-time businessmen and housewives."
The party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the Congress would always support "meaningful, specific and pointed" steps to unearth black money, but sought to know if the Prime Minister had brought the scheme "without much thought just to cover his failure to bring black money stashed abroad and deposit Rs 15 lakh in the account of every citizen."
Though Delhi Chief Minister Arvind kejriwal hasn't commented on the Modi government's move, he has retweeted Mamata Banerjee.
PM Modi's announcement is a major step in his government's battle against black money, fake currency and corruption.
