Mamata Banerjee has asked CPM's Sitaram Yechury to join forces.

New Delhi: The cash crunch following the Central government's withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes has done the unthinkable -- at least, in Bengal.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called up archrival CPM's general secretary Sitaram Yechury and asked him to join hands in their fight against the scrapping of high denomination notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 and call on President Pranab Mukherjee together.

Sources say Mr Yechury told the Chief Minister that he would revert in a couple of days as he is away in Tamil Nadu and will have to consult his Bengal comrades.

Earlier in the day, Ms Banerjee had tweeted that she called up President Pranab Mukherjee and requested for a meeting regarding the cash crunch and the hardship faced by the people.

On Saturday, the Chief Minister addressed a press conference where she reached out to the CPM. "Yes I have ideological differences with them but we should come together for the sake of the country," said Ms Banerjee.

Though the CPM has not publically articulated its position on going together with Ms Banerjee, sources say they are unlikely to be part of any effort that is led by her Trinamool Congress.

"We have always argued that she benefitted from the BJP regime in Sharda investigation. How can we go together?" said a senior member of the party from Bengal.
