New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee over dinner tonight. "States will move ahead and the Centre will also move ahead if we work together, if the state and federal structure is strong, the Centre will be strong," Ms Banerjee said after the meeting.

"If we want to take the nation ahead, we all will have to come together on many issues," Mr Kejriwal said after the meeting, which took place at Ms Banerjee's nephew and parliamentarian Abhishek Banerjee's residence in Delhi.

"The Trinamool Congress has been raising issues of the poor in West Bengal, the AAP has fought for rights of the common-man, have many common grounds, will work together," added Mr Kejriwal.

The dinner has generated buzz as Mamata Banerjee has backed Mr Kejriwal in his power battle with the central government.

Mr Kejriwal sees a kindred spirit in Mamata Banerjee, as they both have fought bitterly against the BJP and have refused to cede ground on powers of the state.

In May, as Mr Kejriwal's turf war with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung peaked, Ms Banerjee had tweeted, "Too much interference in the federal structure is unacceptable. The state government is an elected body. Central government is also an elected body. Every elected body has its own jurisdiction. One must respect the other."
