Kolkata: A minister in Bengal was seen today standing patiently while a policeman tied his shoelaces at a public function.
Rachpal Singh, the minister for Planning and Development in the Mamata Banerjee government, was at the state secretariat attending a tribute to celebrated artiste Ramkinkar Baij, when his personal guard was seen squatting before him to tie his laces.
The minister had apparently taken off his shoes to garland a statue. As he tried to put them back on, the policeman rushed to help and the minister did not stop him.
Rachpal Singh is a former Indian Police Service or IPS officer.
The incident has outraged opposition parties and embarrassed the ruling Trinamool Congress, especially as its leader, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, takes pride in her spartan lifestyle.
