Kolkata:
Barely months to go before the West Bengal elections, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee held a public rally in Kolkata on Sunday in which she coined a slogan - build a new Bengal.
"Let our new slogan be change and not revenge. We want everyone to get education and work. We will bring a new dawn let us build a New Bengal," she said.
Mamata also said that there was no question mark on the party's alliance with the Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) in West Bengal.
"We want to continue with our alliance with the Congress and SUCI," Banerjee, whose party is a constituent of the present Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, said.
Much of Banerjee's speech was devoted to her party's intention to fight the Left Front together with the Congress and Opposition Left party SUCI.
Banerjee said, "In Egypt people have brought in change after 30 years. I urge the people of my state to get rid of the Left, democratically after 35 years of misrule."
Seeking to retain the minority votebank, which has veered towards it since the 2008 panchayat polls and is being desperately wooed by the Left ever since, Banerjee said, "If we come to power, we will implement the Sachar Committee report on minority development in the state."
Noting that she was for co-existence of both agriculture and industry, the Trinamool Congress supremo said referring to Singur "we have protested injustice, but not development".
The Trinamool Congress chief claimed that during its 35-year rule, the CPI(M)-led Left Front has stalled all the development and closed job avenues for the youth.
"They have closed 55,000 large industries, 1.35 lakh small factories and thriving industrial townships like Durgapur and Kalyani have been wasted under their rule," Banerjee said, alleging that the Left is putting obstacles in setting up railway factories in the state.
Alleging that during its 35-year rule, the CPM has indulged in several mass killings, she said, "If we come to power, we will ensure trial of the accused in every case."
Noting that the Centre has been providing funds for several development projects in the state from minority development to roads and new buses under JNNURM project, she said the Left Front government is indulging in false advertisements in the media claiming its sole contribution.
She also criticised the state government for high tax rates, stating while the Centre is responsible for price rise, the state also has a large contribution by way of exorbitant tax rates on general people.
"But keeping in mind the hardship of the poor people, we have not raised railway fares once even," she said.
Banerjee also criticised the Left Front for the state's inactive police and promised to let the police work "impartially without interference".
