Dhenkanal: A villager and a wild bear were both killed after a fight ensued between the two in Odsha's Dhenkanal district on Monday, police said.
The deceased identified as Mulia Biswal, 50, accompanied by his granddaughter, was going to a mango grove in Bisoi village when the bear chased him.
The fear stricken girl managed to flee the spot alone, reached the village and informed about the incident, inspector-in-charge, Parjang, Pradipta Kumar Das said.
The villagers immediately rushed to the spot and found to their utter surprise that the wild animal was lying dead, apparently killed with a sharp weapon by Biswal, who was fighting for survival with his scalp out.
He was immediately taken to the government hospital at Parjang where doctors pronounced him dead.
