Karnal: On his daughter's eighth birthday on Wednesday, a man in Haryana fired celebratory shots and ended up shooting himself. The police say Manoj Kumar, 40, fired two shots using his revolver and died instantly.
In the middle of the birthday party last night at his home in Karnal, Mr Kumar, a taxi driver, reportedly went up to the terrace to fire celebratory shots - a controversial tradition in parts of northern India.
He had a licenced double-barreled gun that his family had reportedly owned for years. One of the shots hit him in the chest.
The police say they are looking into how his licensed double barreled gun misfired.
