New Delhi:
A man has been arrested for allegedly cheating a man of Rs 24.5 lakh on pretext of getting his daughter admitted to a prestigious medical institution under "Ministry quota", police said on Saturday.
"Ranjan Kumar, 27, an engineer and resident of Pushp Vihar but originally from Bihar, was arrested from his house after one Paramjeet Singh from Bhatinda complained that he was cheated by him on the pretext of getting his daughter admitted in a prestigious medical college," said Chhaya Sharma, DCP South district.
During interrogation, Kumar said he along with his associate Satish Chandra alias Manjay Kumar, also from Bihar, had advertised in a prestigious newspaper that they would arrange admission in MDS in a prestigious medical institute in Delhi on the basis of ministry quota.
"Lured by the advertisement, Singh came to Delhi from Bhatinda and met the two who asked him to arrange Rs 25 lakh for the admission. Singh paid them Rs 24.5 lakh on different occasions. The accused showed Singh a recommendation letter of Ministry of Health recommending the admission of complainant's daughter and asked him to come for counselling on December 20 at the institute and further demanded Rs five lakh," Sharma said.
But on verification, Singh found that no such counseling for his daughter was scheduled in the institute and realized that he had been cheated.
Kumar said that on receipt of calls from people regarding admission, they would fix meeting with them and would boast of their high contacts with the Ministers.
"They would also show some recommendation letters for admissions for the MD/MDS courses. For admission in the prestigious medical colleges, they would ask them to arrange for Rs 25-30 lakh," Sharma said.
They also gave Singh a fake sponsorship letter of Ministry of Health by forging the minister's letter head.
Police has recovered Kumar's laptop and investigation is on to nab absconding Satish Chandra @ Manjay Kumar, she said.
