Suspected militants today shot dead one person in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk in the city, triggering panic among the people.
Mohammad Afzal Khan, a resident of Nihalpora village in Sopore of Baramullah district, was shot in the head by two motorcycle-borne youths at the busy Residency road this afternoon, police said.
They said Khan was rushed to the SMHS hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
The gunmen fled from the scene after firing at Khan, the police said, adding that a hunt has been launched to nab them.
No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the incident - the first in the city this year which sparked panic in the busy area.
