Shankar Mishra, who urinated on an elderly woman on an Air India flight, has been denied bail by a Delhi court. The court dismissed the bail application of Mishra, saying it was not appropriate to release him on bail at this stage.
In its order, the court said, "The alleged act in itself is sufficient to outrage the modesty of any woman."
“Considering the above facts and circumstances, this Court does not deem it appropriate to release the accused on bail at this stage. Accordingly, the present application stands dismissed,” Metropolitan Magistrate Komal Garg added in the order.
Earlier during the arguments, Shankar Mishra's lawyer said his act was not driven by sexual desire nor aimed at outraging the complainant's modesty.
The complainant's lawyer, however, opposed Mishra's bail application, claiming she was being threatened.
A magisterial court had sent Mishra to 14-day judicial remand on Saturday, denying police his custody.
Shankar Mishra allegedly urinated on a 70-year-old woman on an New York-Delhi flight last year. He was arrested from Bengaluru last week, six weeks after his egregious act.
Air India has come under heavy criticism for not taking prompt action. Mishra walked away without any action when the flight landed in Delhi. The airlines filed a police complaint only on January 4, claiming it didn't go to the police as it felt both sides had "settled the matter".
