Bhopal:
Twenty people have been arrested from a village in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, where a man and a woman were reportedly humiliated and paraded semi-naked on orders of the local panchayat.
Dhamnod police station in-charge Mukesh Ijardar, a sub-inspector and two other policemen were suspended for negligence in their duties, Indore Range's Inspector General Vipin Maheshwari told PTI.
On Monday, the police said, the 35-year-old woman and her 30-year-old neighbor were detained by villagers, who then blackened their faces, tied their hands, partially stripped and paraded them.
The woman's in-laws had reportedly complained to the panchayat or village governing body, alleging that she was in a relationship with her neighbor and that the two of them would often leave the village together.
The woman has five children.
Both she and her neighbour were discharged from the local health centre after treatment as they did not suffer serious injuries, Dhar's Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhagwant Singh Chouhan said.
