The state human rights panel has filed a suo moto case against the Manipur government for allegedly "forcefully" shifting people of the Kuki community from the state capital Imphal.
The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) said the "forced shifting" of Kukis from Imphal, allegedly by the state government, was not the right step.
However, the authorities have said the people were shifted to other places considering the gravity of the situation amid the ethnic clashes between the Kukis and the Meiteis.
The MHRC issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Commissioner (Home), DGP and SP Imphal East to submit the status report regarding the allegations made against the state.
The panel sought a reply by October 3. "The respondents shall submit the status report on or before the return date," the notice said.
The commission took up the case on its own on the basis of a report published in a newspaper.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur, the top body of the Kuki tribes, declared "total separation of the Kukis and the Meiteis" after the last 24 Kukis at New Lambulane in Imphal were evacuated safely.
