Chandigarh: Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday condemned the death of 16-year-old Junaid Khan who was killed by a mob that accused him and his friends of carrying beef. The Haryana Chief Minister also provided financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the victim's family and urged people to maintain peace in the state.

"Police has arrested one accused involved in the Junaid killing case, and search was on to nab others. The state government has already provided financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the victim's family," Mr Khattar told the media in Chandigarh.

Junaid Khan was travelling with three others in a train after shopping for the Eid festival in Delhi, when a fight erupted over seats, the police said. Between 15 and 20 men pulled out knives and set upon the brothers while making anti-Muslim comments and insisting that one of the packets they were carrying contained beef.

The 16-year-old succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night in a hospital. His three friends were injured, two of them critically, and are under treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre in Delhi.

One person has been arrested in connection with the incident. Police authorities said four more accused had been identified, but have refused to disclose their identities.

"He is claiming he didn't stab Junaid, and also not telling who all were with him during the crime on Thursday night," a police officer said.
