Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar today reviewed the security situation in poll-bound Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of a spurt in militant violence in state, including the deadly attack on an army camp in Uri that left 11 security personnel dead.
Soon after his arrival, the Defence Minister was briefed by General Officer Commanding in Chief of Army's Northern Command Lt General D S Hooda about the security situation in the border state.
"The Defence Minister was apprised about the situation obtaining along the Line of Control, Line of Actual Control and hinterland operations of the army," an army official said.
The official said Mr Parikkar was also briefed by General Officer Commanding of Army's 15 Corps Lt General Subrata Saha about the army operations in the Valley, with particular reference to Uri operation on December 5 and Nowgam infiltration bid that was foiled on December 2.
The Defence Minister also inspected the recoveries, including weapons and warlike stores, affected from the slain militants in the two operations in first week of the month.
The Defence Minister addressed the troops and lauded their efforts in protecting the borders of the country.
"We appreciate the sacrifices you make in ensuring the national security," Mr Parikkar said.
Talking to reporters, the Defence Minister said the purpose of his visit was to understand the ground situation in the state.
