Before leaving his house for Tihar Jail on Tuesday morning, the man who killed model Jessica Lall wrote a letter to his mother. Manu Sharma then headed to Delhi from his family home in Chandigarh. He returned to Tihar Jail two weeks before his parole expires.
Sharma has been criticized by many for showing up at a nightclub in Delhi over the weekend. His parole was granted on the grounds that he needed to attend to his ageing mother, his neglected business, and his grandmother's last rites.
NDTV has a copy of Sharma's letter to his mother. He writes, "Ma, I am really sorry I have put you through this ordeal. Ma, I assure you I have done no wrong. Maybe it is my fate. I love you very much and I know you will not let me do what I am about to do. I will be gone by the time you get this letter."
Sharma's family maintains he did not consult them about returning to jail. In his letter, Sharma goes on to attack the media, saying it "has formed a very biased opinion about me without any facts...they are very powerful and they will not let me live. If I am around you, they will make your life hell as well. I am going to surrender to the Jail and I dont know when I will see you again But I love you very much and I can't see you go through all this. I want to assure you that I will always stand by the values you have taught me."
Jessica Lall was killed by Manu Sharma in 1999. He was sentenced to life in prison by the Supreme Court in 2006.
