New Delhi:
About 35 flights were delayed while 15 have been cancelled as dense fog continues to envelop Delhi for the second day today.
One of the international flights was diverted to Jaipur, airport sources said.
Runway visibility has started to deteriorate from last night and general visibility has reduced to less than 100 metres in the morning, leading to delay in departures of early morning flights.
According to airport sources, the fog has disrupted the schedule of over 50 domestic and international flights.
The general visibility on the main runway (28/11 which is the most preferred runway by airlines during the foggy days) was almost zero while the runway visibility was 75 metres.
At one time the runway visibility dropped to zero at one end of the third runway.
The operations at the third runway remained suspended for major part of the morning due to poor visibility, an airport official said.
The MeT department has predicted CAT-III B fog (dense fog when the runway visibility drops to below 50 metres) till Christmas.
On Sunday also over 100 flights were badly affected due to dense fog.
Many place in north India are also engulfed in thick fog. Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Gwalior and Satna in Madhya Pradesh, Patiala in Punjab and Churu in Rajasthan are covered in fog. Due to the fog cover, the general visibility is less than 50 metres at all these places. And weatherman has predicted that the fog may stay for a few days. (Share your pics)
Technically, flight departure is not possible due to the thick fog cover as the visibility is less than 125 metres; departures too are affected as the runway visibility is less than 50 metres.
Till yesterday, the fog was there towards eastern Uttar Pradesh but today the situation is better in that area.
Over 100 flights were affected yesterday due to this winter's first dense fog, disrupting air operation and causing inconvenience to passengers.
Flight operations virtually remained suspended for about two hours, between 7 am and 9 am yesterday. Runway visibility dropped suddenly from 700 metres to less than 50 metres on all three runways.
The fog cover remained over the airport and the city all through yesterday as well.
Meanwhile, airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), along with all stakeholders like airlines, air traffic control, ground handling staff and others, has taken a host of measures to meet any situation arising due to fog.
Some of the measures include Air Traffic Control (ATC) scheduling slots for departure of flights in advance based on the MeT forecast and airlines prioritising their flights and planning boarding as per the slot, which would reduce inconvenience to passengers.
DIAL and airlines have made adequate arrangements for food and drinks for stranded passengers.
