Maya redefines her political strategy

Maya redefines her political strategy
Lucknow: With mounting legal and political offensive against her, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is reaching out to partymen for support.

In her third meeting with party MLAs and MPs since the elections, Mayawati redefined her political strategy.

Despite attempts to integrate the upper caste vote with the BSP, she made it clear that Dalits will be at the forefront of her political movement.

She clarified that if she ever became prime minister, a loyal Dalit from within the party will replace her as the chief minister, dispelling rumors of S C Mishra, the Brahmin face of the party being a potential successor.

Also caught in a legal tangle for her statue construction spree, Mayawati redefined Mishra's role by making him in-charge of defending her and her government in several cases in the high court and the Supreme Court.

The BSP has announced it would hold statewide protests against the UPA's policies on the 22nd. The Opposition calls it a political gimmick.

After the BSP's dismal poll showing, Mayawati is wary of losing partymen to the Opposition - an issue that dominated her speech at the party meeting.

But the immediate concern is regaining lost ground. By-elections to 13 seats are due in August and Mayawati's desperate for a turnaround.
