Lucknow: In a stern warning, the Election Commission has asked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to respond to a complaint about the installation of her statues and that of her party symbol.
According to the advocate who raised the complaint, the use of Maywati's party symbol -- the elephant -- in the structures which are being constructed, is a violation of the code.
The Election Commission wants Mayawati to respond in two weeks.
Mayawati has already spent Rs 10,000 crores on a dozen Dalit memorials and hundreds of statues across the state capital. And as the state reels under a severe drought, she asked for another Rs 450 crore to beautify the memorials.
As far as the relief for the 47 drought-hit districts is concerned, Mayawati government has released mere Rs 250 crore.
