Maya's memorials: Racing against time?

Lucknow: Constructions are on at Mayawati's pet memorial projects in Lucknow at break-neck speed, much against her own promise.

Two days ago her government has given an undertaking to the Supreme Court that all constructions would stop with immediate effect.

And the Opposition has said that the Mayawati government should be declared unconstitutional for openly violating the law.

"When we form the government, we will raze all her memorials to the ground," Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said.

Mayawati has always maintained that all attacks on her multi-crore homage to mentor Kanshi Ram, and Dalit icon B R Ambedkar are politically orchestrated.

"It's clear that their feelings towards Dalit leaders and icons reflect are casteist and narrow-minded," she had said.

So, what happens if Mayawati manages to finish work on at least some of the memorials by the next hearing, which is two weeks away? That will be yet another twist in the memorial drama that will be keenly followed.
