Mayawati meets Pranab Mukherjee, demands President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh
New Delhi: BSP chief Mayawati today demanded President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that the Akhilesh Yadav government has completely failed in taking action against those responsible for the Muzaffarnagar violence.

Ms Mayawati, who met President Pranab Mukherjee and submitted a memorandum in this regard, said ever since the Samajwati Party has come to power, the law and order situation has worsened in the state.

Several dozen cases of communal incidents have also been reported from several parts of the state and the Muzaffarnagar violence is a glaring example of this, she charged.

"Therefore, keeping the overall interest of people in mind, President's rule should be imposed in the state by invoking Article 356 of the Constitution," she told reporters outside Rashtrapati Bhawan.

She charged that the state government was playing politics over the Muzaffarnagar violence and arresting leaders from BJP and BSP in the name of inciting violence.

"However, the state government is yet to arrest Muslim leaders of Congress and SP who had also participated in the mahapanchayat meeting along with BSP leaders," she said.
