Strong objections to a single entrance exam for all medical colleges, or the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), will be taken up by the Supreme Court tomorrow. Some states and private medical colleges want to continue with their own exams.

On Sunday, over six lakh students sat for the first part of the common entrance exam. Most of them were caught off-guard after the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the All India Pre Medical Test on May 1 would be treated as the first phase of NEET and there would be no more state exams.
The court also said aspirants in states and others who had not applied for the all India entrance exam will be given a chance to take NEET's second part on July 24. The results of both the tests will be announced on August 17.
The court has ordered all medical colleges to admit students based on NEET, which meant elite institutions like AIIMS can no longer have their own entrance test.
The court's decision came as a shock to many students, especially from state education boards, who say the syllabus of NEET, covered by the Central Board of Secondary Education, is different from states and is tougher.
The students who had to sit for the Sunday test feel it is unfair that the second batch will have more time to prepare.
The Medical Council of India introduced NEET to eliminate multiple entrance exams and corruption.
However, following objections from various states on the vast difference in the syllabus, NEET was declared illegal and unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2013.
It was restored last month after a five-judge Constitution bench recalled the earlier decision and allowed a common entrance test for the entire country.
From next year onwards, there will be NEET for all MBBS, BDS exams and it will have only one level.
The Supreme Court will hear plea of states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka on May 3 as whether they are allowed to conduct separate tests or not.
